Course Summary

The Smart Awards SA002 – Safety Underground course provides learners with the knowledge and practical awareness needed to work safely in and around underground networks and operational structures. It focuses on identifying hazards, managing risk, and applying safe working practices when operating below ground or near underground assets. The course builds understanding of health and safety responsibilities and industry expectations. Learners are assessed on their ability to recognise potential dangers, follow correct procedures, and apply appropriate safety controls when working within underground environments.

Course Timings

Day 1 Registration: 8:15 am

Day 1 Training: 8:30 am - 4 pm


Late arrival policy: CASS Training Academy reserves the right to refuse entry to any delegate arriving 15 minutes or more after the course start time. Full course fees will still apply.


What You Will Learn

This course covers two core areas of underground safety:


Gas Testing

Learners will understand how gas risks are identified and managed in underground chambers and operational buildings, including:

  • The use of industry-approved gas detection equipment

  • Hazards associated with underground environments

  • Actions required if hazardous gases are identified

  • Safe working practices to protect operatives and the public

  • Relevant legislation and regulatory requirements


Cover Lifting

Learners will gain an understanding of safe cover lifting practices, including:

  • Risk identification and control measures

  • Correct manual handling techniques

  • Safe use of tools and lifting equipment

  • Identifying and handling different cover types

  • Safe removal and replacement of joint box and carriageway covers

  • Awareness of polluted water and protection of underground apparatus

  • Use of utility drawings to help locate underground structures (optional)


Who This Course Is For

This qualification is suitable for individuals working within telecommunications or similar utility environments who may be required to work on or near underground infrastructure. It is an entry-level course and is commonly required before progressing to underground surveying or fibre network installation roles.


Prerequisites

There are no formal qualifications required to attend this course. Learners must be at least 16 years old.

However, any works carried out on the Highways does require an appropriate Street Works qualification to be held by an individual working on site.


Certification

Learners who successfully complete all required units will be awarded the Smart Awards SA002 – Safety Underground accreditation certificate.

Entry may be refused after 15 minutes

CASS Training Academy reserves the right to refuse entry to any delegate arriving 15 minutes or more after the course start time. The full course fee remains payable in that case.

You confirm that the named delegate is aged 16 or over, meets all relevant prerequisites, and will provide valid proof on the day of training. CASS Training Academy reserves the right to refuse or withdraw attendance if these requirements are not met. In such cases, all booking fees and course charges are non-refundable.
